What a licensed private investigator in Singapore actually does

The job is narrower, more regulated and more procedural than most people imagine. A measured look at what licensed PI work in Singapore really involves.

Most enquiries we receive begin with a misconception. People expect a private investigator to operate like a character on television, improvising, bending rules, delivering a single dramatic result. Real licensed work in Singapore looks very different.

The work is regulated, not freelance

Every private investigator in Singapore must pass a course approved by the Singapore Police Force (PRD) before being licensed. Every PI agency must hold a separate operating licence. There is no informal tier of the profession, anyone working outside this framework is not a private investigator under Singapore law.

In short

Licensed PI work in Singapore is closer to disciplined evidence gathering than to investigation as portrayed in fiction.

What a typical engagement looks like

An engagement begins with a written scoping conversation. We agree on the question to be answered, the lawful methods available, the time window required, and the form the evidence will take. Only then does any field work begin.

  • Define the question, what does the client actually need to confirm or rule out?
  • Confirm the lawful method, surveillance, background research, document review, or a combination.
  • Agree the deliverable, a written report, an evidence pack, or material formatted for court use.
  • Set the cost envelope, fixed fees where possible, otherwise a confirmed daily rate and ceiling.

Why discipline beats drama

The cases that hold up, in court, in boardrooms, or in difficult family conversations, are the ones built on disciplined, repeatable methods. That is the part of the job that does not make it onto television.
